Run. Run. Run, boy. Run.
These were the only thoughts running through Jim's head. He couldn't believe he had done it. He had nabbed a huge pouch filled with gold, right out from under that nobleman's nose. He could hear the guards rushing around, trying to find him, but he was small, fast. He lost them real quick. He stayed put for some time before he returned to his family.
It was a fairly small family, but it still felt cramped. All they had were a few boxes and sleeping bags near the new factory. It would've been a different story had his father stuck around; from the stories his mother told about him, Jim gathered he was a serious big shot.
"I'm back~!" he said as he approached their camp. His younger sister, Effie, shot to her feet and ran over.
"Jimmy!" She shouted, almost falling.
Jim caught her, smiling. "Guess what I got for us."
"Hmm…" Effie hummed, putting a finger on her chin. "Food?"
"Close." Jim tossed the pouch on the floor, a couple novas flying out on impact. "A nobleman was stupid. Left this thing on the counter of that sushi place downtown."
"Woah!" she exclaimed, waddling over to the pouch on the ground.
"Ma, could you make sure she doesn't take all of it?" Jim asked, looking over at another bag. His mother, Agnes, was holding a baby boy in her arms. He wasn't hers, though. She had watched a biker drive by and leave it on a street corner in a box, like he was a dog.
"Effie, come over here," she said softly. Effie obeyed, shuffling to her side, holding a handful of the currency. "I want you to get some food for us, but don't mention the noble or the stealing. Can you do that?"
"Ok!" she said, then slowly made her way out of the camp, grabbing another handful from the pouch on the way.
"Don't spend it all at once," Jim said with a smile, before he sighed and sat next to his mother, curling up. "I know. I was reckless, I could've been arrested. You don't have to say anything."
She hummed to the baby for a while, before he fell asleep. It was then that she spoke. "The more you grow up, the more you remind me of your father."
Jim glanced up at her, his body opening a bit. "Oh, yeah?"
"Yes. You and him were both reckless, but… you cared," she explained.
Jim scoffed, curling back up. "Then why did he leave?"
"I don't know," she said. "It was sudden. Just after Effie was born, he said he had to pursue a lead. Packed his bag and never came back."
"I thought he was a businessman."
"He was. A career, not an investigation." Agnes paused. "...Or, so I think."
Jim sighed and laid down. He didn't say anything for a while, before finally deciding to change the subject. "Have you decided on a name for him yet?"
"No, not yet."
"Hm…" Jim sat up, rubbing his chin. "How about Gerald?" he suggested with a smile.
"No, no," Agnes said, smiling softly. "I want something softer for him."
Jim thought for a while longer, but alas, he couldn't think of another name. "Well, we should choose soon. He'll be walking in no time."
"I know."
