Sometimes, you just need to seek inspiration from the work of others. Check out these cool OC ideas found on CharacterHub and be inspired. Plus, you can always drop a comment on their profiles!
What Makes for a Cool OC?
When I think about what makes an original character cool, I focus on four things: setting, character, novelty, and design. What do I mean by this? Let’s break it down.
- Setting can play a major role in the coolness of an OC, as the world in which a character hails can define them. Are they representing a unique setting or are they at odds with their setting? Either can make an OC particularly cool.
- Character refers to the OC’s unique story, history, and journey. How does their character develop, and how is their journey expressed in their profile and character description? I love to see how OCs change with experiences. Looking at an OC’s character helps me take a liking to them.
- Novelty might also be seen as a gimmick, but that is what makes characters appealing. For example, the novelty of the X-Men is their mutant superpowers - fantastic elements that make them unique. But it also works in more subtle ways as well. Dorthy Gale of The Wizard of Oz is a brave, curious little girl who wins over friends in a strange land. That is pretty cool, too.
- Design is important as CharacterHub offers plenty of visual opportunities on profiles. Design isn’t everything, but clever, eye-catching designs and posing certainly help to introduce an original character and can result in a lot of their cool-factor. With that said, though, great characters can exist without art. That is why I think about design last, despite how up-front it can be.
CharacterHub’s Cool OCs
As you can see, we’ve pulled together a list of over 50 cool OCs. Characters on this list are just a tiny sample of the hundreds found all over CharacterHub. Each unique original character features multiple cool factors. While I tried to highlight them all, I mainly focused on the ones that are most apparent to anyone looking them over.
Turncoat
Pepsi_Person’s Turncoat is an OC that earns many cool points for having a unique design that can easily range from cute to creepy. Turncoat’s profile also reveals some exciting lore that has developed around what appears to be one of Pepsi_Person’s earlier OCs—seeing how this OC has evolved as a portal-keeping mischievous character is exciting. The creator’s note is particularly neat, detailing that Turncoat has grown too powerful since their creation, and it’s too late to nerf them now!
Red Devil
Next up, we have Red Devil by Hollow. Characters in cyberpunk settings are particularly cool, and you can easily up that cool factor by making them a gunslinger. This unique OC sells a particular aesthetic, down to the oni-style imagery in their outfit. The striking red colors also add a lot of appeal as well. This character makes a perfect introduction to the larger Glitch City setting developed by Hollow.
Marshall
Hailoweenie’s Marshall is a well-designed character who makes for a cool OC idea thanks to a striking robotic arm. The character also happens to lead a group of misfits who champion the underprivileged, evoking classic Robin Hood stories. The character taking their name from an author of a book of explosives, which they use in their missions, is also a wonderful touch. There is a lot of interesting lore to explore with this unique OC.
Ula del Rosario
Ula del Rosario, a unique original character by starcross516, is worth studying closely. She also represents historical fiction in a setting with very specific rules and cultures. The character's Filipino and Chinese ancestry creates exciting moments to explore, but the real surprise is the revelation that she is also half-Siren. The character’s swashbuckling and mystical nature is also reflected in her design, making her an intriguing high-seas protagonist.
Koda Blythe
Lampoest created a cool original character in Koda Blythe. After all, what is more remarkable than a spy? Well, maybe a trans spy; Lampoest is playing with all sorts of iconic spycraft while keeping it all novel through a trans perspective. With Koda, Lampoest creates an interesting character with a journey that requires careful attention to how they allow others to see themselves. Also interesting is Koda’s underplayed design - evoking more of a John Le Carré vibe than an Ian Fleming take on spycraft.
Saturn
I have a deep appreciation for Saturn, an OC by micahtoni. This unique OC is a great example of building a setting through a character, as they are a “planetol,” a fusion of a planet and symbol, which is incredibly unique. The character’s design is exceptionally eye-catching and is such a weird, fun concept you can’t help but read through their profile. Reading the profile of this unique character also reveals a pretty shocking background, which only heightens their appeal. I’m wondering about making a planetol-sona for myself!
Isaac Chapelle
The visual design of Isaac Chapelle only scratches the surface of what makes Amelskii_’s character so interesting. The character has an isekai-style background involving a tragic fate that brings them to a new world. Along those lines, the character design carries a level of ornamentation that evokes the magic punk look of fun otherworldly settings. Their look and attitudes give me Persona vibes. We also get a chance to really understand the character due to their extensive background.
Levi Spicer
KK’s Levi Spicer is a great example of using a base and making it into a unique OC. The aesthetic of the bases used gave KK an excellent starting point to tailor their character design across several images while remaining consistent. This blue-skinned elf prince has main character energy reflected in their extensive profile and carefully curated gallery. The background story on Levi Spicer’s profile does a lot of great work, making the character appealing.
Friday
KidMythemon’s Friday is a unique take on the vampire that never loses their humanity, which is fascinating. Friday is still very much a child but meets a great deal of tragedy in their background, but she never succumbs to despair despite all that. Friday’s relationship with their vampirism and her older brother, Evan, also proves an exciting element of the original character, evoking the iconic Demon Slayer manga. Adding a song selected for the OC is a beautiful touch that says so much. I am hoping to see more of their story play out in the future.
Heera Akkineni
EyebagSwag is a great creator to study, thanks to how well they put together their profile for Heera Akkineni. Heera is a uniquely interesting OC thanks to the careful curation of the character through the ingenious use of so many CharacterHub features. An OC made in the spirit of the recent Carmen SanDiego reboot, the character is so fleshed out that she can easily drive its own stories and setting. However, the aesthetics of the fandom do a fantastic job of making for an appealing character as well. Be sure to study this one closely regarding the tricks of making an appealing OC with a cool factor.
Levita
Next up, we have Justemm0’s Levita, whose description can be paraphrased as a “weird [effed] up experiment,” which automatically garners interest. While there is a particular tragedy to the character, there is also optimism in their profile, conveying the complete journey and evoking found family, which is lovely. Levita also has a unique design hook with a stylized glowing eye that looks particularly cool. Between a compelling backstory and an exciting design hook, you have the foundation for an excellent character.
Omar Whitlock
SunRea is the creator of Omar Whitlock, who we may one day see in a video game, which is very exciting. Omar is a puzzle solver and the older half of a pair of twins consisting of himself and Olivia. Twin characters are always fascinating, and it is interesting to see how SunRea makes Omar unique but part of a pair. Also cool, exploring a haunted school is what Omar and Olivia do, though the haunting circumstances are shocking and tragic. This is a well-executed character who makes me want to learn more.
Kip
Ratlover, beyond having an incredible username, also has Kip, a unique OC. I had never seen a fusion of a Jack Russell and a fish until I stumbled upon Kip’s profile, but I certainly can say I have now. Though Kip's profile is a little limited, I am drawn in because of the novelty of this fusion of species. What is the story there? Until I have those answers, I’ll need to be content with the adorable model sheet and await the background of this unique fursona.
Cassiopeia Warren
The character of Cassiopeia Warren by StoryInventor presents all sorts of exciting hooks. Being a princess of a magical kingdom is a great start, but tying her family to a magic pact with dragons, represented by the Black Dragon mark on her arm, adds a layer of intrigue. The most exciting thing about this OC is the journey she takes, which is hinted at in her profile. I am looking forward to seeing it explored as StoryInventor continues to share updates and details.
Trench Brine Maniocrow
MorningBelle’s Trench Brine Maniocrow is a character I am already drawn to, thanks to the evocative tags of #grumpy and #tired. Felt, Trench. Felt. In all seriousness, though, Trench has a particularly gloomy aesthetic that I can appreciate, partially from their demeanor but also evoked in their setting. There are some cool and unique settings details baked into their profile. But the exciting artwork found in their profile sells the character at first glance. There is much to explore with this character, and MorningBelle does a fine job laying those foundations.
Aster
Sometimes, a character's initial appeal comes in the form of artwork that helps introduce a character who is more than just pretty pictures. Such is the case of RiniiFluff’s Aster. Aster is also intriguing because it was adapted from the work of another creator, and I can’t help but want to learn more about how that came about. Aster proves to have a charming personality upon reading their profile. Given their looks, I can easily see this character as a successful V-tuber in another reality. Still, I am most intrigued by the larger story of “When The Stars Crash” mentioned in Aster’s profile.
MysticXOX
TiredWriter, beyond having the most relatable username ever, also has a cool OC concept in the developmental stages that I love to see in MysticXOX. MysticXOX is a fine example of how many OCs begin - as fan characters. At this stage in the character’s profile, we visit the foundations that grow beyond being a Minecraft OC and see many potential paths for the character in the future. This character’s unique, simplified design is like an early canvas that I cannot wait to see filled in. MysticXOX takes me back to the early days when I first developed original characters, and I appreciate that.
Spades
Spades, by StarryCircus, is firmly in my favorite camp of original characters: weird little creature people. As a creator of many little weirdos myself, game recognizes game, and this unique character is part of a species called the Montrid, which already has me intrigued. The furry-adjacent character design is appealing thanks to cute features that evoke multiple species and soothing color combinations. Even better, Spades is the ringmaster of a dark and mysterious circus. I want to go there!
Noire
Noire, by Midnight_Heart, is an excellent example of a fusion OC that combines common topics of OC design into an intriguing new form. The tags #angel and #elf establish this character as a fusion of wildly popular species for OCs. Still, I also need to highlight the evocative hashtag of “#Antisocial Lil Prick, which is a great bit of insight into the character. Noire also has a very pleasing, dark design to suit the revenge-focused story that Midnight_Heart looks to be establishing. Noire is a strong example of combining fantastic elements in an original character.
Summer
Who doesn’t love a clown? Well, a lot of people, but hellscellar’s Summer is pretty adorable and pretty easy to get behind. The idea of a clown superhero is a pretty unique concept, and the character profile does a fantastic job showing how interesting this unique OC can be. Even better, the creator’s note indicates the character was part of a D7D campaign. Now, that is one adventure I would love to hear about. Be sure to enjoy the adorable artwork of the character as well.
Ghoulvine the "Terror"ble
As a fan of all things Halloween, I can’t help but think RetroBunny’s Ghoulvine the "Terror”ble is one of the coolest OCs I have seen on CharacterHub. The character originates from a game-themed project called Military Showdown, so you not only get to see the unique properties of the Jack-O-Lantern character on their profile, but you can also experience them in the context of their video game setting through the larger project. Plus, pumpkin-themed characters are cool in general.
Toby Nishimura
Spoonshape introduces a cool character in Toby Nishimura through very appealing artwork. The unique art style is polished and makes for a very pleasing character design that can’t help but draw a visitor into reading their background and details. The fact that the character is attached to a larger comic project makes them very interesting. Overall, Spoonshape does a wonderful job introducing a unique character through their CharacterHub profile.
Suriya
Suriya’s character profile, by kurokitty, creates a unique fan character concept that evokes a cool species and interesting setting from the game Sky: Children of Light. Even more impressive, this cool OC profile was the creator’s first attempt at profile writing, showing just how creative kurokitty is. The character’s design elaborates on their in-game character, adding refined design details. Suriya intrigues me in both the character and the game. Fan characters can be very excellent ambassadors to all sorts of worlds.
Sienna Vergara De Léon
I have to praise a character profile that introduces me to a new word, and that means I have to praise Baana’s profile for Sienna Vergara De Léon. The word in question is “skunkly,” which is perfectly cromulent and fits this cool original character, who looks pretty skunkly to me. The character has a fascinating background story and a well-defined personality. A solid selection of art makes the character even more appealing. I certainly hope that Baana adds more to their profile soon.
Zoe Irfan
Lysander’s Zoe Ifran has a cool OC design, which is emphasized by the way it is presented on CharacterHub. This mad scientist supervillain has a charming presence suited for their cyberpunk setting. Their profile also features prominent dark and purple colors, selling viewers on the Zoe experience. I also think that the inspiration gallery does a lot to sell why I find this character so intriguing, and I would suggest OC creators of all types take advantage of something like that themselves. Great work, Lysander - Zoe Ifran is cool as heck.
SkyHigh
At this point on the list, we have a rad fan character in SkyHigh by MentalBreakdown. While I am not extremely knowledgeable about Transformers, I love the Dinobots, so I am already sold on this character. This cool fan OC has a fantastic design and a really cool color scheme that is really appealing. What makes them unique, though, is that the creator has given the OC some characteristics that evoke some of their struggles with anxiety, which goes a long way toward making a compelling character.
Clematis Youngwood
Dxdelion_Xx presents a unique character with Clematis Youngwood, who, while bookish, seems to be on the cusp of a great adventure. The profile does a great job establishing the character at the beginning of her journey and makes me want to learn more. It is also inspiring to see that her mother has a character profile, which gives me a stronger sense of their relationship. While the early stages may seem relatively subdued, this OC has a great foundation.
Avril
Demons are popular choices for OCs, and OmniscientGoo _'s Avril is an excellent example of this. This character is a former human who becomes a demon living in a collapsed society. The character profile establishes an intriguing backstory that helps sell Avril as part of a richly realized setting. Especially interesting is the character’s struggle to deal with their unique heritage of humans and demons and the control required to not let the “demoness” out of hand. The impressive gallery also helps show the appeal of this anime-inspired demon OC.
Adrastea
Adrastea is a stylish-looking alien appropriately tagged as #hot on their profile by their creator, Mystara. Weird alien sex appeal is one way to garner some attention, but this cool OC is more than just good-looking. Their profile has many intriguing story hooks, including the Lorathian-Mystarian war, which I am dying to learn more about. Overall, Adrastea’s profile does an excellent job of spotlighting what makes them such a unique OC without giving too much away - a good model for any CharacterHub profile.
Pasadena
Electrosbizarre has quite a character in Pasadena who exudes a specific chaotic energy that gathers all eyes on them. Her character profile sells the energetic, confident, and boisterous personality shown in the illustrations of her. And of course, the art is fantastic as well. Though the profile doesn’t feature as much information as others on this list, everything listed tells us precisely what we need to know about Pasadena as an individual, which is the aim of a unique OC’s profile. Let’s hope we get some further updates soon.
RK
RK is an excellent example of creating a mystery while maintaining things for people to connect. Memer, the creator of RK, does a great job giving viewers just enough about their OC to drive interest without giving away too much about them. Among some of the unique ways Memer sells the characters are in-character text and references to the concept of the Star Glades, which presents all sorts of exciting possibilities for storytelling. A very curious OC indeed!
Acid
CarbonCat's Acid offers unique and eye-catching trans representation. Their fascinating, otherworldly design draws anyone in. One of the best parts about CharacterHub is the scope and variety of characters users create. Seeing a trans demon/shadow creature with all sorts of powers is such a fantastic outlet of imagination that you can’t help but be intrigued. My favorite detail is that they were born in a Denny’s parking lot and stream games on Twitch.
Emma Vox
ThaLizardWizard offers a unique take on an isekai protagonist in Emma Vox, who is ported to one world as a child and back to Earth later. It is exciting to see an OC dealing with such radical circumstances in unique ways and the implication that those unique circumstances are not yet through with her. Even more interesting is to give that OC a family. Emma Vox is a character I want to learn more about, and I will be keeping an eye on her character profile for updates.
Grim
Who doesn’t love a personification of death as a character? The penultimate chauffeur is an excellent base for a character like CheriVeil’s Grim. The combination of butterfly imagery and the trappings of the Grim Reaper prove eye-catching and help this unique OC stand out. Also assisting this OC in standing out is the reveal that Grim is an adoptive father, which certainly adds a spin to how one might perceive the manifestation of death.
Sada Masato
Sada Masato by lovethyenemy is a unique OC that combines great images with great worldbuilding. Sada stands out as a figure meant to inspire hope in a world where fears take on physical forms by not feeling fear—which is quite an advantage in such a world. His profile also introduces all sorts of exciting worldbuilding concepts as well. Of course, all that comes with the initial interest developed when viewing the fantastic artwork introducing his profile.
Min Octavius
We have a fun, young character in Min Octavius by Pikuni_Kyota. Reading Min’s profile reveals a charming, energetic character with a web of interesting relationships. Also, the character’s disorders and traumas on the profile go a long way toward building a detailed individual that anyone can understand. There is so much detail here that Min doesn’t even feel like a character but the profile of an actual 19-year-old person. Be sure to check out their moodboard as well because it is wonderfully intense.
Eloise
Alyillustrates’ Eloise is a fun hybrid character style with the unique traits of a human and a bunny, resulting in an adorable package. The character profile features a ton of lovely art, which makes for an appealing character to draw. However, Eloise is also a great example of a character still being developed, as her creator has made notes about elements that require changes or updating. I love unique OCs like this because I see them change and grow.
Jackster
I have a soft spot for clowns and jesters, so I immediately became interested in Johnnycage’s Jackster when I stumbled onto their character profile. However, even without an inherent interest in the clowning archetype, anyone would be intrigued by the character through the fun character art. It begins with the initial profile image being a variation on the TBH meme, but the whole gallery is fun. What a wonderfully colorful character!
Vivian
Vivian’s initial quote on her profile page, as written by Emmy_beanss, is, “I eat metal,” and I can’t help but be drawn in. A good sense of humor can make an excellent first impression for some OCs, and it worked on me here. Vivian is an example of a fan character, this time from the LEGO Ninjago franchise. Though the character has recognizable LEGO elements, Emmy_beanss did a fantastic job building a cool original character from that framework. The profile takes advantage of CharacterHub’s profile features as well.
Cyberstar
Deven895’s Cyberstar is a solid example of using an original character as a Vtuber. It isn’t just that the OC is a Vtuber in their setting; instead, this was the creator's actual Vtuber persona, which is neat to see. Of course, the creator also notes this unique OC is an older persona, but it is still very cool to have that record included through CharacterHub. Of course, one can’t help but appreciate the cute details, such as a love of mint and the fact they are a hybrid of a human and Shiba Inu.
Oliver
Oliver is a work-in-progress OC by Pinkdevilxoxo, but already off to a strong start. This steampunk character hits many essential elements for a starting character, including biographical details, interests, and reference art. While the initial profile is limited, I see endless potential and am eager to see what their creator adds next.
Chuva
witheredroses13 introduces an emphasis on design elements with their character Chuva. Chuva’s aesthetics evoke the techniques of stained glass and kintsugi in exciting ways that are new to me in the context of an original character. However, just as beautiful as these artistic elements is the storytelling going on in Chuva’s profile, which deals with religious imagery, poetic imagery, and LGBTQ+ themes. It's a pretty unique OC with evocative characteristics.
Nadia
Nadia, a character created by octofizz, is an example of how what appears to be an initially simple-looking character can contain a lot of depth. Nadia’s initial appearance evokes a yellow-colored emoji, but further reading reveals she is a fan character from Roblox who has become something unique - a world traveler. Her ability to travel to new worlds and spawn plush toys adds some exciting lore. Also of note is that she has her own Spotify playlist, a great way to convey her personality.
Lydia Madlock
Criminal characters are another genre I find endlessly fascinating, and Lydia Madlock, by Paracosmic, is a fantastic OC. This mafia leader runs a speakeasy and crime family but seemingly allies herself with a vigilante force, creating a compelling contrast for narrative purposes. Lydia’s detailed profile creates an intriguing entry point for a crime-based story setting and a cast of characters who all seem fun. This makes cool OCs special - they can pull readers into a new world.
Lily Baker
Lily Baker is the creation of lordoffrogs and happens to be a ghost! Ghosts are fun concepts for OCs, and Lily is undoubtedly a unique original character on this list because of that. Lily’s profile is quite in-depth and has the surprising addition of stats, which gives me a whole new way to interpret a ghost as a character. The addition of a poem written by Lily adds so much to her character as well. What a haunting and fascinating original character.
Naoci
Who doesn’t love an imp? Well, at least we know that sweetly does, thanks to their OC Naoci. Naoci is an adorable, impish character with a fun design that draws the eye. While Naoci’s profile is limited, the bold character design is exciting. The character description also adds a lot to our understanding of who Naoci is, but I want to learn more. Let’s hope sweetly plans to update soon.
Isabel Bennett-Lopez
Isabel Bennett-Lopez by stxrdustskies is very much an example of what we might call an ascended extra. Her creator’s notes indicate that the character was not particularly significant but is now the main character of the author’s Five Nights at Freddy’s AU setting. This is really neat to see, as sometimes our characters grow and evolve and end up in places we never expected them to. What a unique character journey!
Deadeye
Deadeye, created by… deadeye(?!), is a western-themed OC who proves very compelling with their background as a sharpshooting assassin and demon. The character originates from their creator’s novel El Diablo Vaquero, which sounds cool. Oh, and don’t think I didn’t notice that listed among the character’s likes is the on-the-nose “spaghetti western.” Combining a fun character in a Western setting and the pile of details makes for quite an impressive OC.
Nettie Lark
It is always interesting to see what kind of characters emerge from a dystopian setting, and Nettie Lark, by LuminaLyric, is no exception. While her creator does not appear to be an illustrator, the profile is quite interesting, with essential details that paint a picture of the character. You don’t need to be an illustrator to craft a compelling original character, and even then, LuminaLyric mentions using a generator to create Nettie’s avatar. This OC is an excellent example of using the tools available to the creator.
Fleur Rose
PumpkinDraws presents the adorable fairy Fleur Rose, who lives in the charmingly named Wisteria Woods. Fleur is PumpkinDraw’s first character added to CharacterHub, whose profile has been left to represent where her creator started. I think one of the things that makes Fleur such a cool OC is that she has a vibe I appreciate - who wouldn’t want to live in a mushroom cottage by themselves?
Ricky
Wolfypoof’s Ricky is another great example of an adorable OC design. Ricky Hunter is an outgoing, optimistic wolf linked to an impressively large supporting cast. He also matches his astrological sign of Leo, which is a great detail to include. Ricky makes for a unique OC because he seems like someone you could be friends with, and his profile perfectly captures that.
Procyon
Procyon is another alien OC to explore on CharacterHub, created by Kjasefa. The character has a fascinating description that evokes the entity's alienness, describing their survival by “breeding with herself” into the current day for millions of years. Absolutely unique and one heck of a story hook. Also, there is a mystery - there is no art of Procyon’s original form. That’s almost scary. What a cool concept and well executed.
Amaryllis
Vampires can be found everywhere on CharacterHub because they are such popular sources for characters in fiction, and Amaryllis is a perfect example of why. Additionally, we have another example of a character who has been adopted by one creator from another. In this case, the original concept appeared to be from Valenmollart, but Ethereal currently owns the character. I could say a lot about the design, but let’s zero in on Ethereal’s character-building contributions, such as focusing on empathic abilities. The note about crying blood is also an intriguing element.
Cushie Rumvoz-Strider
We enter a world of Homestuck-style OCs with Cushie Rumvoz-Strider by CreepyMakara. Homestuck may be responsible for up to 30% of all OCs on the internet. That’s a lie of course, but it is always fun to stumble on a great new troll character, such as Cushie here. Every design element and characteristic is present in the profile, and the addition of the character’s room, which connects to their nature as a troll character, is also wonderful to see.
Carol Bellamy
We have a Christmas-themed OC with Carol Bellamy. Eden originally designed this OC, but Carol Bellamy is currently held by J_UwU_les. This original character is a lot of fun, representing an interesting new species, the Dainty, while offering adorable bakery vibes. Check out that moodboard to get a solid sense of Carol Bellamy’s thing.
Raphael
Raphael continues the trend of OCs created by one person and adopted by another. In this case, Raphael’s origins appear tied to an unknown user but is currently managed by Littlegover. Raphael’s profile offers some interesting essential information about the character and is well put together, though it could use more. The lovely artwork with fascinating color choices generates part of the mystique. The addition of an attached song does a lot to help define their vibe.
Okonoko (0)
Cereal_killer’s funky-looking demigod character, Okonoko (0), hits a lot of cool points for me. This wandering tradesman has a mysterious background and intriguing story worked into their profile. Being a demigod, the character is given a tremendous amount of power but is written in such a way that it comes off as a natural characteristic intrinsic to their setting. This is one unique OC.

All of these OCs present all sorts of cool and unique visions specific to their creators, and there is a lot to admire and emulate in our creative process. However, this is only a partial list of many additional characters. If you want to find more inspiring, cool characters, use CharacterHub’s search and tag system.
As you can see, we’ve found a lot of cool OCs that represent specific genres, species, and design trends. You can easily hone your search by those terms and concepts and find hundreds of other original creators, just like you, who can help inspire your next great character.
